816 Day

#ShopLocal with Kansas City Small Businesses (and Have Some Fun) on 816 Day

Looking for something to do outside your house this weekend and support small businesses? Join the city-wide celebration of everything Kansas City at 816 Day on Sunday, Aug. 16.

It is not a coincidence that a huge party in Kansas City occurs on the same day (8/16) as the city’s area code (816). It’s by design. The event is an annual celebration Kansas City, showcasing the culture, art, businesses, organizations and people that make our beloved city uniquely KC.

In 2018, former Mayor Sylvester “Sly” James signed resolution 180592 that recognizes 816 Day as an official holiday for the city of Kansas City, Missouri. For the past two years, city officials and local organizations, including the Downtown Neighborhood Association, Kansas City Area Transportation Authority, City Market and do816, worked together to produce a full day of programming with performances, vendors and venues offering sweet 816 deals—special offers that cost $8.16 or $81.60.

A growing trend across the country, many metropolitan areas honor their city with an area code celebration. However, COVID-19 has put the brakes on several of these events, including the number of planned activities in Kansas City. But, the City of Fountains is not one that quits. Since the event’s inception, business owner Bizzy Benton has been pushing forward with a plan and events for the holiday and continues those efforts in 2020.

This year’s theme is The Homecoming – 816 Day Sunday Celebration, with activities in the historic 18th and Vine District and other neighborhoods in the city.

Explore all the businesses offering specials Sunday Aug. 16 and some of the activities you can get involved in around the city. Have fun, stay safe and support our small businesses!
