New (Free) Legal Help for KC Small Businesses, Nonprofits Navigating Pandemic
Attention entrepreneurs, small business owners and nonprofit leaders:
If your organization or business has faced hard times because of the pandemic and if you need some pro-bono legal services, here’s a new opportunity you’ll want to check out.
Stinson LLP and the Association of Corporate Counsel’s Mid-America Chapter have typically hosted an in-person Nonprofit Legal Clinic, but because of COVID-19, the clinic was put on hold. However, these organizations and a variety of others have worked to create a virtual clinic and have expanded that to small businesses and nonprofits so you can apply for a free legal services consultation right now, when you need it most.
The UMKC Innovation Center, Missouri Small Business Development Center at UMKC and KCSourceLink are helping spread the word that these legal services are open and available to small businesses and nonprofits hit hard by the pandemic.
Through the new virtual clinic, qualifying nonprofits and small businesses can apply for brief legal assistance for help with a bunch of topics:
● corporate documents
● board policies
● liability of directors and officers
● contracts; employment matters
● fundraising and other funding questions
● intellectual property matters
● real estate
● taxes
● restructuring or termination
● risk management
Also, organizations can get advice about:
● force majeure
● CARES Act
● other issues specific to COVID-19
The Entrepreneurial Legal Services Clinic will screen requests and may follow up with applicants (that’s you) if there are questions about the legal services requested.
After that screening, the clinic will match you with an attorney or attorney team from local law firms and corporations. The legal team will schedule a time for a virtual, brief legal-services consultation to answer questions you asked about when you applied.
