When Kelsey Ryan was laid off from her journalism job in 2018, that was the beginning of her new career—one she’d build from the ground up.
On the day she lost her job, she took inventory of her finances, contacted more than 25 editors across the country for leads and updated her resume. By 5 p.m., she realized the traditional 9-to-5 wasn’t for her. That day, The Beacon — a new KC-based journalism nonprofit — was born.
