TOPIC: Our nation is losing the voice of community newspapers.
TALK: Guest Speaker Michael Bushnell Publisher of the Northeast News.
TASTY: Pho 79 Vietnamese Restaurant, A Brand NEW Chamber Member
On March 24th, The Northeast News published a front page that was devoid of any news with the expressed intent of sending the message of what it would look like if a community had no local news source. The paper had lost a number of key accounts at the end of 2020 and Managing Editor penned in a column that the paper had a roughly sixty day trajectory for survival if the financial situation didn't change.
That blank front page did exactly what it was designed to do, striking a nerve not only with the community but drawing the attention of major media outlets across the country including the Associated Press, The Washington Post and the Huffington Post. At this month's Northeast Chamber of Commerce luncheon on Tuesday April 27th, come hear the rest of the story from Publisher Michael Bushnell on how the team at The Northeast News used that blank front page to change the direction of the financial tide at the paper as well as community news in the Historic Northeast Community.
