Stan Hays, co-founder and CEO of Operation BBQ Relief (OBR), knows his way around competition barbeque, earning two grand and four reserve champion awards and several top ten finishes. He was also runner-up in the 2015 season of Chopped Grillmaster on Food Network. But his passion for food is matched by his passion to help people in distress through his work with OBR. In 2017, Stan was recognized as a Top 10 CNN Hero.
OBR started in May 2011, when Stan Hays and Will Cleaver responded to the devastating tornado that hit Joplin, Missouri. Deploying a team of volunteers, they served 120,000 meals over 11 days. During the deployment, Stan and Will saw the impact they could have and decided to form Operation BBQ Relief (OBR) as a nonprofit organization.
Since that time, OBR has responded to 54 disasters in 25 states, serving more than 2.9 million meals. All with the help of 7,000 volunteers and sponsors including Prairie Fresh, Butterball, Blue Rhino, Yeti, Farmers Insurance and more. Their work is focused on creating a sense of normalcy for victims of natural disasters through the comfort of a hot barbecue meal.
