Jim Suhr (pronounced “Sir”), a desk editor and general assignment reporter in the Kansas City bureau of The Associated Press, will share pitching tips with the Solo Pros group on Thursday, February 16*. An award-winning print journalist, Suhr has nearly 30 years of experience and has been with the AP for almost two decades. He will talk with us about how and what to pitch the AP, the best times and ways to reach a reporter, the composition of the Kansas City bureau and how to virtually guarantee your story ideas are ignored.
Suhr is a University of Kansas journalism graduate who worked for The Leavenworth Times and Joplin Globe before joining the AP in 1997. He first served as a business and global automotive industry writer in the AP’s Detroit bureau and later worked in St. Louis covering local Fortune 500 companies and high-profile court cases. Suhr won national recognition for his reporting of the often-violent aftermath of the 2014 police shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson. He transferred to Kansas City in December 2015.
Suhr looks forward to meeting you at the first Solo Pros lunch meeting of 2017 and encourages everyone to bring their toughest questions.
*Please note the Solo Pros group typically meets the second Tuesday of every other month, but this month we are meeting on the second Thursday due to Valentine’s Day falling on the second Tuesday.
