Build the Future of KC Schools. In this 2.5 day workshop powered by 4.0 Schools, learn how to take popular innovation frameworks, Lean Startup, and design thinking, and use them to create innovative solutions for your classroom, school, and community.  For our September 16 weekend, please join us for our special Techweek edition!


Friday, September 16

What problem keeps you up at night? Uncover the root of that problem by participating in an unconference with in-depth discussions. Then, refine your problem statement and get a crash course in Design Thinking (created by IDEO and Stanford’s and Lean Startup (a technique championed by Harvard Business School) innovation frameworks. Leave the day ready to validate your problem in the community and begin building solutions on Saturday.

  • 4:50-5:00: Arrival
  • 5:00-5:10: Kickoff (Dinner served), intorduction to Mozilla Gigabit Community Fund
  • 5:10-6:00: Design Challenge & Problem Pitches
  • 6:00-7:00: Unconference
  • 7:00-7:50: Refine Problem Statements & Crash course in Design Thinking and Lean Startup
  • 7:50-8:00: Debrief

Saturday, September 17

Get ready to think critically about who your problem truly impacts. Participants will get out of the building to do community interviews to gain a deeper understanding and gain valuable insights into what solutions can be created. The day concludes with a crash course in prototyping (quick, low-cost ways of building new solutions), so that participants can create innovative solutions that go beyond traditional education practices. 

  • 8:00-8:30: Overview (Breakfast served)
  • 8:30-9:00: Iterate problem statements, identify who it impacts
  • 9:00-9:30: Feedback
  • 9:30-12:00: Get out of the building!
  • 12:00-1:00: Iterate problem statements (Lunch served)
  • 1:00-3:00: Get out of the building!
  • 3:00-3:40: Problem Statement Pitches
  • 3:40-3:50: Prototyping crash course
  • 3:50-4:30: Develop prototype, get feedback

Sunday, September 18

Build your solution and see if it works! Spend the morning developing your prototype and figuring out how to test it. Then get out of the building and see if it works in the real world with real users. Participants will get a chance to edit and iterate on their prototype before running it through more tests. End the day with pitches, celebrations, and an implementation plan with next steps.  

  • 8:00-8:30: Overview (Breakfast served)

  • 9:00-9:30: Develop tests for prototype
  • 9:30-12:00: Get out of the building!
  • 12:00-1:00: Iterate prototype (Lunch served)
  • 1:00-3:00: Get out of the building!
  • 3:00-3:40: Final Pitches
  • 3:40-3:50: Implementation/Next Steps
  • 3:50-4:00: Celebrations/Debrief


  1. Make sure you bring your laptop if you have one.
  2. Also, come with a draft of a one sentence problem statement. What keeps you up at night in education? It should be in the format “The problem is _____ and it affects _____.”
