As of 2012, 36 percent of all non-farm and privately-held businesses in the U.S. are owned by women. Yet, women-owned businesses are largely under-represented among high-growth firms. In particular, Census research indicates that fewer than two percent of women-owned firms generate revenues of $1 million or more. This same research demonstrates that firms with $1 million or more in revenues are far more likely than smaller firms to have employees: Ninety-seven percent of firms with at least $1 million in revenue have employees, compared to only 16 percent of firms with less than $1 million in revenue. Thus, increasing the number of high-growth women-owned firms would not only support women’s entrepreneurship, but may also notably contribute to job creation.
