Ready to Aim for $1M in Revenue? Apply to ScaleUP! Kansas City, Grow Your Biz

It's time to stop “just” running your business and grow it.

Maybe you want to get a handle on your cash flow and financial projects but don’t know where to start. Or you wonder if you’ve focused on the right market and what opportunities you’re missing. And you might be ready to hire a new employee, but you’re not sure how to hire the right one.

If any of these sound like you and if you’re ready to work ON your business and not just IN it, you might be ready to apply for ScaleUP! Kansas City.

ScaleUP! KC is an elite, intense, transformative (and free) four-month program that teaches driven small-business owners how to propel their business to the next level of success.

This intensive class for Kansas City entrepreneurs teaches small-business owners how to scale, forecast revenue and expenses, hire and retain employees and more. Plus, ScaleUP! KC offers a personal learning experience with know-how and wisdom from expert business coaches who’ve been there and conquered that.

When you join ScaleUP! KC, you’ll learn how to hire the right employee, how saying “no” can actually benefit your business and how to avoid financial pitfalls. Those are just a few of the benefits you’ll get from four months of coaching, training and peer mentoring.

“For those selected for the program, their eyes open to all the possibilities,” says Jill Hathaway, a business coach for ScaleUP! KC and business development consultant with the UMKC Small Business and Technology Development Center. “They’ll not only learn from expert coaches, guest speakers and their ScaleUP! KC peers, but they’ll get invaluable personal advice on how to scale their business.”

More than 100 local entrepreneurs from diverse backgrounds and industries have taken the ScaleUP! KC program and have learned from coaches like Jill, who has decades of experience in retail, sales and the financial sector. She’s got entrepreneurial cred. In addition to those expert coaches, entrepreneurs also will learn from their peers who hail from the tech sector, manufacturing, service industries and many more areas of business.

“And after the course is done, they continue to talk to us,” Jill says. “They continue to talk to their peers in the class. We’re here as long as they need us.”

To be eligible for ScaleUP! KC, you’ll need to have:

  • led a company that’s been in business for at least two years and has at least two employees
  • generated annual sales in excess of $200,000
  • created a strong market than can generate more than $1 million in sales
  • the drive to take your business to greater heights

  • Sold? Great! Apply for the ScaleUP! class by Dec. 31. The next cohort begins in February 2019.

How KC Businesses Scaled Up for Success

Scale UP! KC helped Heather Spalding of augmented-reality tech startup Cambrian envision a brighter future. The program primed the company to streamline operations and improve its app engine. Cambrian also snagged a $100,000 Launch KC grant to help its tech really take off.

    Stephanie Sage, Sage Restoration

After her time with ScaleUP! KC, Stephanie Sage of Sage Restoration won some huge awards and made some huge moves. She nabbed the 2017 Kansas Woman-Owned Business of the Year for service and won the Enterprising Women of the Year Award. Her business also was named one of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Dream Big Finalists — oh, and Sage Restoration beat its yearly sales goals by 12 percent and added three employees. Here’s her journey, from how she got that first customer and later scaled her operation.

    Chris Goode Ruby Jean's Juicery
    Chris Goode, Ruby Jean's Juicery

Chris Goode squeezed every last drop out of his ScaleUP! KC experience. His business Ruby Jean’s Juicery opened a location in KC’s Northland with Ball’s Price Chopper and with the YMCA Northland. This is how he cultivated his business for growth.

Sharon Auck’s Fresh Approach Cleaning Professionals got a new contract that added 50 percent to her workforce and let her business work with fellow ScaleUP! KC grad Travis Thonen of Midwest Comfort Homes.

Kelly Wilson is stitching together a bigger operation. Through her business Weave Got You Covered, she bought a 6,500-square-foot building, opened the city’s only public fabric/design studio and joined a Goldman Sachs’ program that helps entrepreneurs. Follow this thread to read more about her journey.

Vincent Rodriguez’s big idea got even bigger. His operation Maps Coffee Roasters is expanding to Maps Foods with a focus on coffee and chocolates -- and that makes him a rare 100 percent bean-to-bar manufacturer in the Kansas City metro.

And those are just a small, small number of the more than 100 entrepreneurs who’ve used ScaleUP! KC to take their operations to the next level by expanding facilities, hiring new employees, financing new projects, increasing sales and expanding markets.
