Dolce Bakery's Secret Ingredients to Winning Battle of the Brands 2015
Battle of the Brands 2017 starts at the top of March. If you haven't nominated your business yet, do it now; nominations close Sunday, February 12.
As we prepare for this year's Battle, let's take a look back at one of our favorite Battles of all time (let's be honest, we love all of them.) The year was 2015, the competitor was Dolce Bakery...
Meet Erin Brown of Dolce Bakery in Prairie Village, Kan., the 2015 Aristo of Entrepreneurship in KCSourceLink’s Battle of the Brands.
Using the team’s naturally competitive streak and creative spirit, Dolce Bakery sifted out some of Kansas City’s biggest brands including the Boulevard Brewing, Sporting KC and the super fiesty and tenacious KC Cool (the Microenterprise Champ, who, it should be mentioned, knocked out AMC Theatres). We revisited Dolce Bakery for totally legit reasons that do not include delicious sugar cookies to find out the secret ingredients to winning Battle of the Brands.
Here’s what Erin had to say in her own words.
Why did you decide to Battle?
“We found out about the battle of the brands from our friends at Morgan Miller Plumbing and thought it would be such an interesting challenge for our team. It was not like anything we had ever done before but as a small local company we knew it would be a great way to gain some additional exposure while doing one of my favorite things: competing.
I have a highly competitive spirit and that carries over to my team so they were more than excited to take on a new challenge that would feed our competitive spirit.”
What did you get out of participating?
“While I knew that the competition would feed our competitive spirit, I had no idea how it would bring us together as a team and feed our creativity as well. People on our team who had never participated in the creative side of the business were energized to brainstorm and share their ideas.
Using our creative talents and leaning on each other’s specific skills we strategized, communicated and pulled together as a true team. We learned that it’s ok to be our own cheering section, to show our pride and to champion our bakery.”
Did you have a strategy going in? Were you “in it to win it”?
“We just knew what a great team we have and what a great product and service we provide and that relying on all of the talents that got us where we are as a bakery would get us a win in the battle.”
What are your secret winning ingredients?
"To capture what makes us special every day, our drive, our determination, our creativity and our passion. To capture that and display it proudly around town, on social media and in our shop every day.
And of course, we asked. You never get anything you don’t ask for and knowing that we knew we just had to ask our loyal customers, family and friends to support us in our latest endeavor."
Any words of wisdom for Battle newbies?
- "Be who you are. Be authentic. People want to root for people who know who they are, embrace who they are and are proud to be who they are.
- "It doesn’t hurt to incorporate some city pride while doing it.
- "Keep it short, simple, and sweet so people understand what you are asking of them when it comes to voting for you!
- "Be creative, be consistent, be passionate and, most importantly, have fun!"
Dolce Bakery rallied its fierce fans and followers across its social media networks —Facebook, Twitter and Instagram—with social media posts that left us craving more. The bar has been set high, and we cannot wait to see what our 2016 brands have whipped and whisked up for us.
The deadline for nominations in Battle of the Brands 2017 is quickly approaching (Sunday, February 12.) Nominate your business here. We only accept self-nominations and, as always, it’s free to play. Get that nomination in, and may the best business win!
