Five Health and Wellness Tips for Busy Entrepreneurs

Meet Alex Buie, owner of Life Adapted Fitness in Kansas City, Missouri, and fitness professional for almost a decade.

Too often, entrepreneurs are so busy working in their business that they’re not able to work on their business… or themselves. Alex is here with five ways to improve your health and wellness, right away:

Every client who walks through the door at Life Adapted Fitness thinks the obstacles and challenges standing in the way of their healthiest self are unique and insurmountable. And while every client deserves care and patience, I’m here to tell you that we’re all human, and there are some fundamental things that we could all be doing better.

Here are five tips that will improve your health and increase productivity:

  1. Start your day off with exercise

  2. Eliminate sugar

  3. Increase water intake

  4. Increase healthy fats

  5. Get quality rest and sleep

Start your day off with exercise  

Exercising can be as little as a 30 minute walk every day, to every other day: start with a 30-minute walk with some stretching for a couple of weeks. Once you get accustomed to the new schedule, feel free to increase the duration or the intensity with resistance training.

Exercise makes us smarter and better people. To make sure you get the most out of exercising, get in the habit of starting your day early with a workout. This will increase your energy and allow you to be more productive as the day progresses.  

Eliminate sugar

The best way to eliminate sugar is to focus on eating whole foods and doing your best to not buy anything that comes in a package and says fat free.

Sugar is very addictive and causes a spike in insulin, which is linked to increased fat storage. Sugar can hide in plain sight, in pastries, baked goods, anything that says fat free, soda, sports drinks, and most processed foods.

Increase water intake

Try to drink 20 ounces of water with every meal. This is an easy way to get the bulk of your water without trying too hard.

Water makes up 60 percent of your body and aids in helping weight loss, energy levels, and also improves the body’s ability to function overall. Impaired energy levels and mood can be attributed to even 3 percent fluid loss, which is considered mild dehydration and can lead to major reductions in memory and brain performance.  

Increase healthy fats

Try these tips: Bulletproof coffee (adding coconut oil and/or grass-fed butter to your coffee), increase your intake of fish, increase nuts like almonds (serving of 5-10 almonds) and add more avocados to your diet (add half on some eggs or on an open faced burger).   

We know that eating three to five meals a day is also a great tip, but as a busy entrepreneur it can be hard.  Increasing healthy fats will provide you with a true feeling of satiety when accompanied with protein. Healthy fats provide you with more energy than protein and carbs combined, which means the volume of food you are required to consume can be reduced.

Get quality sleep & rest

Avoid electronics at night and focus on reading a book instead. The blue light from electronics keeps your mind stimulated and prevents quality rest.  

Another solution is to add naps during a break in your day.

  • 15-20 min – increases alertness and motor skills

  • 30-60 min – increases decision making skills and memorizing

  • 60-90 min (REM) – solving creative problems and creating new connections in the brain

Sleep is the time for your body to heal and repair itself.  If you're sleep deficient, you may have trouble making decisions, solving problems, controlling your emotions and behavior and dealing with change. Sleep deficiency also has been linked to depression and in some cases suicide. If sleep deficiency continues, there is an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and stroke. Other areas that rely on sleep to maintain your health are the immune system, weight maintenance or prevention of obesity.

There are five straight-forward ways to feel and perform better, right now. Instead of tackling all five ASAP, choose one to focus on this week. Just one. Once you’ve got that down pat, add another.
