Find Your Whimsy

little wing, Jennifer Schumaker

the little wing
Jennifer Schumaker | Gardner, KS | Microenterprise

In a word: whimsy. That’s what Jennifer Schumaker creates through her startup, the little wing. Founded in 2013, the little wing features doll and animal friends and play accessories created out of new and vintage textiles. Last Christmas’s collection (featured in Ink Magazine’s Holiday Gift Guide) included such pop culture nods through a reindeer named andre {3000}, teddy {Pendergrass}, and gladys {Knight}.

Below, we asked Jennifer to take our KCSourceLink Shop Quiz. Read on to learn more about how she brings whimsy and wonder to Kansas City.

KCSourceLink Shop Quiz

The noun that describes who you are     Daydreamer

The verb that describes what (or why?) you do     Play

Your entrance music    “Choppa Style” by Choppa (I know, I know….I can’t help it)

Your power motto    We can do hard things – Glennon Melton

Your KC happy place    The West Bottoms holds a sense of magic for me I can’t describe.

Your app obsession    Instagram. I may have a problem.

Your offline addiction    Books. REAL books. The way they smell, the way they feel, the way you can escape into them. Oh, & candy.

Kansas City’s best move    Any time we actively invest in our city & its citizens is a great move.  Kansas City is embracing the Shop Local movement & making it a fun place for indie artists.

Kansas City’s best kept secret    If I told you it wouldn’t be a secret.

Your triumph    I think putting yourself and your product out into the world is a triumph in itself. My biggest triumph was at my very first giant show, The Strawberry Swing Indie Craft Fair a few years ago. A little girl came by my booth and picked out a puppy friend to take home. I saw her on the lawn of Alexander Majors Barn about 30 minutes later, flinging her puppy around by one arm and throwing it into the air. That’s why I do what I do. Pure magic.

Your wisdom earned the hard way    I believe the saying is “Haters gon’ hate”.

Your comfort    My family and my sweatpants.

On your entrepreneurial watch list    I love to follow other local KC makers through social media. The level of craftsmanship in our city never ceases to amaze me.

On your entrepreneurial wish list    My dream is to own a small brick and mortar store where I can feature local KC artists and host small workshops. As for now, I would love to see the little wing products featured in a local store or two.

Your KC entrepreneurial crush    I am so in awe of my fellow Handmade in Kansas City makers and Hey Paul Studios. The hustle, the drive, the creativity.  Plus, they’re all really good looking.

Your mentor    Again, I will say my fellow Handmade in Kansas City makers. They are a constant source of knowledge and encouragement, as well as a fantastic sounding board.

Where you find your tribe    I am a big fan of live music (love shows at CrossroadsKC).  I try to attend Hey Paul Studios’ monthly Eat Drink Stitch events around KC and have met several awesome people. Local arts and crafts shows are like home to me. Any place that is full of old, dusty reminders of our history. I hang out with artists from the JCDS Emerging Artists program about twice a month & always wish my visits were longer.

Your next move    Keep making. And never forget why I do what I do. And be a backup singer for Dave Matthews Band or Jennifer Hudson.

Your exit music     “Chasing the Sun” by Sara Bareilles

Your last word: We create . . .    wonder.
