One of the things that makes Kansas City different is our vibrant and vital art scene. From the streets and galleries of First Fridays to the rich halls of the Kauffman Performing Arts Center, from the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art to the Kemper and Nerman Museums of Contemporary Art, our streets and bridges, our eyes and ears are filled with art.

It’s part of our city’s fabric and experience.

Five artists launched PLUG Projects in 2011 as a way to expand the dialogue around arts and the opportunities for artists in Kansas City.

In their West Bottoms gallery, they energize artists and the public at large by exhibiting challenging new work, initiating critical dialogue and expanding connections of artists in Kansas City as part of a wider, national network of artists.

What you do:

PLUG PROJECTS is a curatorial collaboration by five KC artists who share the mission of bringing fresh perspectives to the community.

Your big news in 2013/2014:

PLUG opened a second gallery at its 1613 location and curated a group show of KC artists at the Bemis Center in Omaha.

Which Resource Partners have you worked with?
Artist INC
Kansas City Volunteer Lawyers & Accountants for the Arts

Who helped/are helping you build your business and overcome your challenges?

One of our first large successes was receiving a Rocket Grant from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.  Rocket Grants are administrated locally by the Spencer Museum of Art and the Charlotte Street Foundation.  Having that grant and support from those organizations at the beginning was a huge boost in getting PLUG going.

In terms of learning how to start a business, PLUG relied heavily on knowledge from the Artist INC program.  When we were finally ready to establish ourselves as an LLC, we looked to the Kansas City Volunteer Lawyers & Accountants for the Arts.

What are your favorite Kansas City brands? Who gets it?

Missouri Bank and Boulevard Brewing Company. They realize the importance of creating community and they know that in many situations creating community begins with artists.
