“How do I raise money for my business?”

We get this question all the time from Kansas City entrepreneurs. Our response varies based on the stage of business and what type of funding is appropriate. Sometimes we encourage them to enter our CapitalMatch program. Other times, we recommend great courses offered by our Resource Partners.

Depending on how large you want to grow your business, bringing on investors or taking out a bank loan may be a great idea. But the truth is, 95.6 percent of startups are bank rolled by the entrepreneur themselves or friends and family. Which means that if your finances aren’t in order, your ramp to success is going to be flimsy (at best).

If you know your bank account and wallet need some TLC, you’re in luck—April is Money Smart Month in Kansas City. Organizations across Kansas City, in collaboration with the Kansas City Federal Reserve Bank, have come together to help consumers (which includes wanna-preneurs and entrepreneurs) better manage their personal finances through workshops, presentations and a comprehensive resource website (which you can access 24/7/365).

There are worthwhile events going on all April long during Money Smart Month. The headline happening is Money Smart Day on Saturday, April 7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Kansas City Public Library downtown location. Enjoy a day jam-packed with free actionable sessions, from understanding credit to avoiding financial traps.

Here’s a video to get you pumped up to take charge of your finances:
