In my work I run across lots of passionate people who are working in that chaos that is called entrepreneurship. They come by different names:  entrepreneur, business developer, economic development specialist. Entrepreneurial all, they creatively seek new ways to assist entrepreneurs. Some strategies work, some don’t; but all ideas are good. Lately I’ve found myself on a plane more than not. When my feet land on the ground, I get to see some of the innovative ways that people are working to build businesses across America. In an entrepreneurial spirit, I wanted to share those experiences with you. So sit back, relax and enjoy the ride!

Fair Trade in the Developing World
Our daughter just left us for two and a-half years to join the Peace Corp and is now working in Rwanda. Like me, she is working in entrepreneurship. We had a recent conversation about exporting products from a Rwandan women-owned co-op to the U.S. I found myself in a shop on King Street in Alexand ... more»

Have Kids, Plant Trees, Create Ideas
Driving back to Regan National airport I noticed that some presidents get a highway named after them (George Washington Memorial Highway), some just a grove (Lyndon B. Johnson Grove), some a tombstone in Arlington National Cemetery (William H. Taft), and some a whole airport. How will you be ... more»

Best Time for Entrepreneurship 100 Years Ago?
On my way to the airport this morning, I saw the billboards celebrating the 100th anniversary of Rockhurst University and the 100th year of Tivol. This year is Hallmark’s 100th birthday as well. Kansas City must have been a rocking place in 1910. I’ve run across a couple of areas of the coun ... more»

Bringing Venture Capital to Fly-Over Country
The Midwest is well known as fly-over space for venture capitalists, so several groups in the Midwest are looking at how to turn on the spigot. It appears to be a chicken and egg dilemma: what comes first, the venture capital or the deal? The Kansas Bioscience Authority (KBA) has decided to a ... more»

New York Explores Statewide Collaboration for Innovation Led Economic Development

Interagency Collaboration Creates New Regional Partnerships
It is interesting that the Thursday 5 p.m. flight out of Washington D.C. always carries a number of congressmen and senators back to their home territory. Perhaps it is the perfect time for some to educate and lobby. A captive audience for sure. I spent yesterday at the U.S. Small Business Ad ... more»

Universities Spur Economic Development
Thank you President Lincoln! I bet Abraham Lincoln had no idea when he signed into law the Morrill Act that the land-grant universities established as a result would have such a profound impact on our present economy. For the many years that I’ve been part of the University of Missour ... more»

What does Saudi Arabia & Entrepreneurship Have in Common?
December 2, 2009 This week I got to spend some time in Boston, MA working with Babson College and a group from Saudi Arabia that is trying to inspire entrepreneurship in that country. Stay tuned for more on this discussion in a later post. I had the opportunity to meet a number of new ... more»

Boxcars are Incubators for New Ideas
I’ve been honored to spend time at the Edward Lowe Foundation in Cassopolis, MI. An operating foundation, this organization does not give out grants, instead uses its funds to maintain the grounds of a retreat center handed down from the man who created Kitty Litter. As part of the center, a large ... more»
